What are the common symptoms of dry eye?
Everyone experiences dry eye differently because there are so many potential underlying causes.
Typical symptoms include:
- Redness or eyes that appear irritated and bloodshot
- Consistent burning or tingling sensations in the eyes
- Eyes that feel itchy or as if they have something in them
- Increased sensitivity to bright lights or sunlight
- Excessive tearing, or eyes that always appear watery
What causes dry eye?
There are many potential causes of dry eye.
In some cases, the cause is obvious, such as environmental irritants or short-term inflammation.
We have found 7 possible causes of chronic dry eye problems:
- Disease of the meibomian glands
- Defects that affect the eyelid or shape of the eye
- Certain medications
- Abnormal eye pressure
- Deficiency of aqueous fluids
Because the underlying causes vary, treatment methods after diagnosis will also vary according to the patient. It is also not uncommon for there to be more than one cause for dry eye.
How is dry eye diagnosed and treated?
Individual evaluations that include imaging of the meibomian glands, measuring osmolarity of the tear film, and screening for certain conditions, we are able to diagnose and provide treatment for the condition.
Some of the typical treatments include:
- OptiLight by Lumenis: The first and only IPL FDA – approved for dry eye management.
- TearCare Treatment
- MiBoFlo Treatment
- Scleral Contact Lenses
- Prescription eye drops to combat inflammation
- Treating oil glands
- Blinking exercises or proper eyelid hygiene
TearCare Treatment for Dry Eye
TearCare is a quick 15-minute in-office procedure designed to treat the underlying cause of dry eye – meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD).
The TearCare headset fits comfortably around the eyelids and applies therapeutic heat to warm the stagnant oils blocked in the meibomian gland.
It is an effective and comfortable procedure, and perfect for those who prefer to have a single in-office treatment due to a busy schedule.
MiBoFlo Treatment for Dry Eye
Give your eyes the spa treatment they deserve! MiBoFlo is a comfortable and affordable in-office therapeutic treatment that provides releif for dry eye.
The MiBoThermaflow device targets the miebomian glands more precicely and consistently than any home care device, and thins and clears the blocked lipids to allow for a healthier tear film.
Durring this 4-session therapy package, using a slight pressure, heat, and a gentle massaging technique, we warm up the miebomian glands to improve oil production and relieve dry eye symptoms. Patients often find this treatment very relaxing and comfortable.
If an infection is causing the issue, low-dose antibiotics may also be prescribed.
